Sub Group on Indigenous Child Rights

The Sub Group on Indigenous Children and Youth was formally established on October 24, 2005 at Native Child and Family Services in Toronto. The sub group reports to the NGO Group on the Convention on the Rights to the Child and has as its core mandate the collection of information on Indigenous child rights and working on International policy projects to support the recognition and implementation of rights for Indigenous children, youth and families.

The Sub Group is composed of four NGO Group Members and approximately 40 observer organizations which service Indigenous peoples on six continents.

The Indigenous Sub Group Final Workplan identifies the mandate, workplan for this year and membership for the group. Current efforts are focusing on the creation of an international literature review on Indigenous child rights including a survey of existing treaty body instrument observations and Indigenous customary law. The sub group also provided support to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in the development of General Comment 11 on Indigenous children and their rights.

Canada is scheduled to appear before the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2111 for its periodic review under the UNCRC. Canada submitted its country report in 2009 describing how the Canadian Government views its performance implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. NGO's, experts and Indigenous peoples organizations are invited to submit your views on how Canada is performing under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These NGO reports are called shadow reports and you can find out more about how to write and submit one by reading our December 2003 Newsletter .
