Marisa Smallboy is a Plains Cree woman from Ermineskin Cree Nation in Maskwacis, Alberta, a mother, and a Registered Nurse. As a descendant of residential school and day school survivors, her commitment to Indigenous health advocacy is deeply rooted in her family’s experiences and her desire to create a healthier future for First Nations children and families.
Marisa graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta in 2023. Her undergraduate studies opened her eyes to the historical and ongoing injustices experienced by Indigenous peoples within the healthcare system, inspiring her to advocate for equitable, culturally safe care. In her nursing practice, she provides immunizations, community health education, and postnatal home visits while helping families access essential health benefits and services through Jordan’s Principle.
Marisa is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing Research at the University of Alberta. Her thesis will explore the immunization consent process for First Nations adolescents in Maskwacis, centering the experiences of First Nations families and community perspectives. Through her nursing practice and research, Marisa hopes to improve healthcare policies and outcomes for Indigenous children and families for seven generations to come.
