A pediatrician and educator, Dr. Lola Baydala’s work goes far beyond her medical practice, focusing on the promotion and development of health education, and the development of meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities to address their needs and concerns in ways that build on community and cultural strengths.

Based on mutual knowledge and respect, Dr. Baydala has created and maintained long-standing relationships with First Nations communities in Alberta, including Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Enoch Cree Nation, and Maskwacis Cree Nations. By inviting community members to share their beliefs, protocols and input, she has helped communities create child-focused health programs designed to meet their unique needs.

The safety and well-being of First Nations children and young people is always at the forefront of Dr. Baydala’s mind. One of her latest projects involves combatting negative media reports through youth empowerment and the development of a travelling exhibit that highlights the community’s strengths and resilience.

Dr. Baydala shares her knowledge with health professionals and students, and inspires them to learn more and take action to support the health needs of First Nations children. This honourable mention for the P.H. Bryce Award acknowledges her commitment to work with communities in a respectful way to achieve better health outcomes for Indigenous children and youth, and to inspire others to do the same.
